What Are Psychedelics?

Psychedelic drugs, also known as serotonergic hallucinogens, are powerful psychoactive substances known to alter perception, cognition, and mood. Experts agree that psychedelics work by affecting 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, which are usually activated by the neurotransmitter serotonin.

When a psychedelic substance enters the body, it triggers activity in the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which is associated with functions like thinking, mood control, and perception. These drugs also temporarily disrupt communication between different brain regions.

So, which substances are considered psychedelics? In most cases, psychedelic drugs include psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”), LSD (“acid”), and DMT. Sometimes, dissociative drugs like ketamine and PCP (“angel dust”) are also lumped into this group, though they’re technically a different class of substances with distinct effects. Likewise, MDMA (“ecstasy”) may also be grouped as a psychedelic or dissociative drug due to its status as a hallucinogen.

Psychedelics and Addiction

Are Psychedelic Drugs Addictive?

Different psychedelics interact with the brain and body in different ways, but there are some general similarities between all drugs in this group. For one thing, experts don’t classify psychedelic drugs as “addictive,” at least not in the same way substances like opioids or amphetamines are “addictive.” Limited research suggests that psychedelics don’t typically lead to addiction because of how they affect our brains; they’re believed to be “weakly reinforcing,” which means they’re less likely than other substances to cause chemical dependence.

However, this is not to say that it’s impossible to experience a substance use disorder focused on psychedelics. Other evidence suggests that people may still quickly develop a tolerance to psychedelics (even if they aren’t “addictive”), leading them to consume more and more of them to experience the same effects. With an increase in substance use comes an increase in mental and physical health risks.

In reality, there simply isn’t enough research into the impacts of heavy psychedelic use on the brain or the potential effects of psychedelic withdrawals. Additionally, a person can still be diagnosed with a substance use disorder if they meet the proper criteria for the continued use of any substance despite its negative consequences. So, a psychedelic addiction can be a very real, potentially dangerous experience, even if it’s not yet well-understood by the world around us.

What Does Psychedelic Drug Rehab at Casa Serena Look Like?

Casa Serena is a women’s addiction treatment facility offering comprehensive care for those facing psychedelic addiction, mental health struggles, or other substance use disorders. If you’re looking for a psychedelic drug rehab facility that’s tailored to your needs, you’ve come to the right place. We strive to create a space for healing designed for women by women.

Since 1959, Casa Serena has been working to uplift and inspire women from all walks of life to embark on their recovery journey. We offer a full continuum of care to give our clients all the support they need under one roof. Our goal is not only to help you achieve your treatment goals but also to build a community of strong, empowered women who can continue to support each other in the long term.

Those who are just getting started with treatment tend to be a good fit for our women’s inpatient treatment, a residential program focused on starting the road to recovery on the right foot. Clients can receive medical support during withdrawals, participate in regular therapy, and access 24/7 support as they begin to navigate sobriety. We’re also proud to offer a top women’s partial hospitalization program in California that invites clients to participate in more intensive care during the day and return to their homes at night.

Meanwhile, our outpatient rehab for women gives clients who have completed a higher level of care (or who are simply further along in their journeys) a flexible option for ongoing support. Here, clients can participate in individual, group, or family therapy sessions that fit their schedule and help them continue to achieve their treatment goals.
